A Day to Remember

Morgan McKinney
Sports Event Entertainment Management-2012

On Friday February 3, I was called on stage by Leslie Migneault, NSO Leadership Academy Advisor, at the 2012 Northeast Regional Competition. To my surprise, I was acknowledged for my contribution to DECA for the past four and half years. It felt so great to be recognized in front of the large crowd that attends every year. I was even given a sash to wear at Graduation!
Since I first began my involvement in DECA, I am only the second student to receive this award.  In my role as a student trainer, I have helped with the past three Regional Competitions, but this year I was involved in the planning as well. I and one other student even stayed up with NSO Competitive Events Director, Dr. Wilkinson all night making some changes that were needed at the last minute.  I had no idea how much work goes into organizing these events.
To be involved in an organization at Johnson & Wales is as easy as signing up and paying membership, but to actually learn something and take an experience away from any organization you need to dive right in. DECA has made an impact on my life that I will truly always remember. The advisors for NSO are not just Professors or Employees of Johnson & Wales, they are family.
