With busy streets, global companies, and buildings kissing the sky; New York City is the epicenter of the business world, and JWU NSO took the Big Apple by storm last weekend, Nov. 13 - 15.
DECA hosted the Collegiate Leadership Academy (CLA) at Hotel Pennsylvania. CLA gave NSO members a sneak peek into the worlds of global fashion, business, entertainment, and marketing leaders. Members participated in tracks for Advertising, Sports & Entertainment Marketing, International Business & Finance, Fashion Merchandising & Retail Management, and Hospitality & Culinary Arts. Students in each track spent time touring major companies in their respective industry and participated in a case study competition.
Company visits included Brand Union, Bloomingdales, Bloomberg, NASDAQ, and Radio City Music Hall.
“The companies we saw were really amazing,” said Joe Esposito. “I got to see Bloomberg and the New York Stock Exchange. Did you know Bloomberg is not just finance but it is actually Finance and Television? I actually got to see Michael Bloomberg which was really cool!”
“It was incredible to get a glimpse into the world of big-brand marketing at Brand Union, more specialized operations at a boutique agency, and in-house marketing at Sweetriot,” said TJ Lind. “It blew me away how diverse the marketing industry is and to see the immense opportunity.”
Perhaps one of the biggest takeaways from CLA was networking. Hundreds of student leaders from every corner of the country met and worked together at this conference.
Finally, after the conclusion of business tours, case-study presentations, and networking events, everyone gathered in the grand ballroom for CLA’s closing session. Johnson & Wales students took home first place in three out of four events at the conference--no easy feat.
